THE RED PENCIL DIARIES

Name:
Editrx
otherwise known as
She Who Edits Books & Drinks Martinis

A BOOK production editor & producer, she lives in a rural 200-yr-old renovated farmhouse connected to a barn, well over 10,000 books, 5 cats, 1 husband, and no cows, alas. Her company, Windhaven Press, edits & proofreads as well as designs & typesets books for companies such as St. Martin's Press, John Wiley & Sons (Sybex), Bantam/Random House, DAW Books, Black Widow Press, (the late-lamented Miramax Books), Rounder Books/Records, Penguin Putnam, and HarperCollins, to name just a few. She was the production manager of Baen Books for seven years, and worked for the company for a little over 16 years total.

You can find her book about lupus, The First Year: Lupus--A Definitive Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Avalon Pub., 2003), at all major bookstores and, of course, at places such as Amazon.

She has also written for tech & computer magazines (such as BYTE.com and WIRED News), and speaks on NPR (NHPR, usually) about technology issues and about lupus. She created and managed online communities starting in 1992 for some of the big dotcoms, including Excite's original portal communities.

She's spent a life surrounded by giants: her godfather was Pres Eckart (co-inventor of the ENIAC, the first binary vacuum tube computer); her stepfather was a chemist working with Fermi and later helping head up the Oakridge facility during the entirety of the Manhattan Project; her father was the US naval duty officer on site when the Hindenburg attempted landing at Lakehurst, NJ; she studied ballet under both Pola Nirenska and Mary Day in Washington, DC, in the 1960s and early 70s; and she has copyedited and line-edited the likes of Isaac Asimov, Neal Stephenson, Neil Gaiman, Ray Bradbury, and Mickey Spillane. Someday she may even do something of note herself, but she doubts it.

She often speaks of herself in the third person.
